Everything You Need To Know About Legal Aid

Have you ever heard of the term ‘legal aid’ but were not exactly sure what it meant, how one gets legal aid and whether you are eligible? Legal Aid essentially provides high-quality legal assistance to low-income people and families. We explore the essentials and everything you need to know about legal aid in America.

What legal services does legal aid offer?

The Legal Aid program aims to provide quality legal assistance to people in need of a variety of services. Overall, the service offers civil, criminal, and juvenile rights to low-income people and families. These practice areas cover matters such as family issues, domestic violence, health, housing, disability, benefits, employment, immigration and prisoner law just to name a few.

Am I eligible?

Finances are the main element that legal aid eligibility is based on. If you earn over a certain amount, you could be denied as you earn too much money. People with incomes at or below the federal poverty level are eligible. For example, if a family of 4 applied and the entire unit had a household income of $25, 812, they would be approved for legal aid. If they earned more than $25, 812, they would be denied. Please note that these figures are changed annually. If you would like to find out more, click here.
